I consider myself an audiophile. I have a high end Yamaha 2 channel integrated amp and CD player coupled with Paradigm Reference series speakers. I also have an $1100 Rega turntable.
Like most people there was a time when I was only buying vinyl. I fell into the record company trap of spending more money to get “warmer” sound. That was a mistake. I have close to 500 CDs that are 95% jazz. I finally set up my hifi room and have been going through my CD library and I have to say that the digital “harshness” is gone. Listening to Jimmy Forrest blow some blues on Most Much is amazing.
Yes, I have some vinyl records that sound amazing as well but I have too many that sound like shit. Remember that vinyl is growing and that there is a shortage of pressing plants so some titles are being issued with the simple objective to make more money. I’m not saying that vinyl is bad but what I am saying is that my CDs sound amazing as well.
I keep telling people to invest in a good hifi system if you’re really interested in listening to great music but a lot if the over produced garbage today it really doesn’t matter. My system cost me only $12k and I have no need to upgrade or change anything. I am coming to realize just how good these musicians really are
