Well, of course there is always Stereophile, and also The Absolute Sound. The Recommended Components listings come out in the October and April issues of Stereophile, and while they are not a complete listing of what is good, they are certainly useful.
Two key factors, of course, are how much you are willing to spend, and what type of music you will be listening to.
Do you already have some LPs and/or CDs, or will you be using a computer as a server to store and play back your music?
I am 72, by the way, so I can relate (although I have always had some sort of sound system since high school).
At age 50+ I am just getting back into better quality audio components after 30 years. A lot has changed ( or so it seems to me ) so I came here to ask questions. Great bunch of people here. Super friendly and super helpful. I have also been reading Stereophile and, just recently, The Absolute Sound for further information and to try and keep up to date on recent developments.
I decided to opt for an amp, network streamer and cd transport as I have a lot of CD's and the network streamer will give me access to zillions of songs/music from all over the world. I will definitely be getting back into vinyl soon and a decent turntable will be next on the list.
I am envious that you can have a dedicated listening room!
