Hello All,
I been having a lot of fun this week playing with these two speakers. I had been using the NHT Classic Three as my main speaker, but then sold them and went back to my Quad 21L. The NHT just didn't do it for me in the bass like the Quad could. I listen in a small room (9'x12') and in the nearfield (6' away). I listen to music at a low to moderate volume level. 70% orchestral and 30% jazz & pop.
In this room I've setup the Quad 12L active & Wharfedale 8.2 active. I always thought these two would sound identical, they seem to share the same drivers, crossovers and amplifiers. After matching the levels, the Quad seems to have a slight edge. The bass seems to have a little more definition. It only seems noticable when you switch back and forth between the two. I can't pick out which one is playing at any one time, so the difference must be slight.
When I switch to my reference speakers (Wharfedale CR-30)all three seem to be voiced nearly the same. They are all very close to the Quad ESL-57. At least to these old ears. After being in a steelmill for 35 years, more and more things sound the same.
Has anyone else had the chance to compare these, and what did you think?
BB
