One thing that never seems to be discussed here or in magazines is product consistancy.
We are dealing with pretty small differences in sound quality with the high end units, if one component in their manufacture is faulty or out of spec this can have a massive effect on the sound quality. An out of spec resistor, a leaky cap, a poor P-N junction on an op amp there are numerous possibilities.
I beleive this is a real issue, ive bought/auditioned units and experienced bad sound quality when i should have had great sound quality.
I believe therefore that if you listened to several indentical models from a manufacturer you would experience different sound charactistics.
