I dont know which DAC the Droid III is using, but my samsung galaxy s with the Wolfson IS lightyears ahead of the i-devices.  I did a direct comparison vs an ipod with the imod improvements, and a sanza clip; extremely well regarded in the portable source vein.  My galaxy was precisely on par with the imod; even sonially quite similar.  But both were behind the sanza in most auidible departments.

If the Droid uses the same DAC, I would say it's a good sign!  My dac isnt without it's faults, but for the convenience factor of having such reasonable quality on my phone... I'll stick with it :)

Note: all of those tests were with 320kbps mp3.

I first used a phone for music when I had to travel at little notice to provide care for a sick relative. I found myself in a home without music (deafness as well as infirm). I had loaded a couple of dozen 16/44.1 WAV rips when I got the phone but had not listened to it as a music player. I found the V-Moda earbuds I was using sounded better than the 8 times more expensive Ultimate Ears triplefi Pro 10's did playing the same files back on my iPOD classic. I credited the earbuds BUT, since I have returned home I have found the more expensive earbuds play even better from my phone using the PowerAmp app. Now I suspect the phone does at least 24/96 high rez. If someone made a DAC that could access the phone through its USB port, I would be really thrilled. As it is, the phone has replaced my iPOD as my portable music source.
