a good DAC and a good headphone amp. The transport and DAC could be covered by a used Sony Playstation One, Model SCPH-1001. These units are overacheivers but are increasingly becoming hard to find. You can get the PS2 DVD remote control to work with the PS1, the sensor plugs into a game port. A Schiit Asgard headphone amp would work well. Good Luck!
Connecting amp directly to playstation? Will some other model of playstation do as well? I found SCPH-1002, is it much different? Also is there a way to recognize SCPH1001 only by picture?
PS1 to the amplifier RCA inputs. The SCPH-1001 I believe is the only one with the surprising sound quality. The only way to tell them apart is to look at the label.

that the GOOD ps1 is the only one with the rca outs for audion. The others use a ps1 out.
