Aloha,
I've been spending time listening to the new Paul Simon disc, and it made me think of an issue that I haven't really thought of in a while - Digititis.
I think there is a certain frequency range that Paul's voice occupies when he sings a certain way that is very attention getting in a bad digital kind of way with regard to hearing digital artifacts.
It's on those parts of songs where he "ups" his register a bit. Mostly when he's trying to sound a little plaintive or pensive.
Then, on top of that, Eno's "atmospherics" have that dreadful "digital surround effect" sound. Kind of hollow and metallic and like they used a very low bit rate. Definitely a distraction. The noise floor is distractingly high, too.
_______________________
This "digititis" marred Rhythm of the Saints, too.
The mixes seem a little strident in some parts. As I recall, the drum corps in "The Obvious Child" has this sound.
Anyway, is anyone else hearing blantant artifacts on this disc, or is it just me?
