I feel very strongly that one of the main purposes of this section of the forum, i.e. the music area, should be to inform our fellow forum members of excellent recordings and events that we may have stumbled upon. The posts don't have to be full out reviews but just a simple heads up, similar to the one I posted the other day regarding Marcus Belgrave's Louis Armstrong Tribute Band. I know that my posts tend to be slightly more involved but that's because I have some past experience has a jazz reviewer and I'm comfortable writing a few quick lines.
However, what's important is that if you have a few "buried treasures" that you might like to share, please do so and don't worry about how good or bad your writing may be, the music will speak for itself.
Anyway, here's a real gem that came out a few years back and flew right under the radar. Why everyone missed it I have no idea since it has just about everything one could possibly want in a jazz recording. Tremendous personnel, great sound, outstanding tunes and arrangements, excellent solos and much more. You interested?
Okay, no more fooling around.
Enrico Pieranunzi - Fellini Jazz
Cam Jazz 2003 (CD 5002)
Enrico Pieranunzi is an Italian piano player who has worked with the likes of bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, all of whom, along with the tenor saxophonist Chris Potter make up the outstanding quintet gathered for this date. They play arrangements of songs from various Fellini films, or songs inspired by songs from Fellini films, and it works to perfection. Everyone's playing is just wonderful, I heard this disc many times and I don't remember ever hearing a wrong or misplaced note. Nice art work and useful liner notes to boot.
A five star winner. Maybe even an R2D4 (in a few years that is)
