I'm setting up a new home theater system, and I am looking for some advice. I come from a family of Bose-philes, but after doing some research, I have to admit I agree with a lot of the problems I've heard with Bose. I have some current equipment, but am willing to start from scratch.

The room is a decent size, roughly 13'x15+' (technically 13x20, but part of the opening is a staircase and hallway to the rest of the basement, so 13x15 is roughly the usable space). The couch will be against the back wall, so I am thinking a 5.1 setup. I am mainly looking for a system to handle tv, movies, and gaming. Bluetooth functionality for music playback would be nice, but probably not used frequently. I'm looking to keep the budget around $1000-1500, but I have a little flexibility to get the right system.

After some research, I'm wondering if this is a good time to invest in Dolby Atmos for a home theater setup. Most people seem to advise discrete systems over HTiB's, but I am curious about the Onkyo HT-S9700THX (It looks like most discrete Atmos setups would cost at least ~$5000). It seems like a good price point to get a starter 5.1.2 Atmos enabled system. I could then slowly upgrade to better speakers over time and eventually replace the AV receiver.

Does anyone have any advise on if this seems like a good idea? I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the choices for speakers in a discrete system. I currently have a Sony STR-DH540 AV receiver which I bought as a cheap replacement when my old receiver died a few years back. I also use a Bose V100 video speaker as a center speaker and a pair of Bose 310 Series V Bookshelf speakers for my left and right channel. As I said though, I am willing to scrap the whole system for a good 5.1 setup.
