The Vincent SA-31 preamp that sells for $699 is better-sounding, IMO, but for $1000 it is not too bad.
If you could find a used Audio Research LS-2 or SP-9 preamp, that would be much better; they are built like a tank and last forever, and the sound is excellent.
I see a SP-9 Mark 2 for $950 on E-Bay.
