I initially brought this up in Software:Rock, but the problem has expanded a bit, and I wanted to see if anyone had some feedback.
First, let me say that all of the following Mofi records sound GREAT. I'm only pointing out what may be a minor issue with their packaging or shipping.
I ordered the Mofi re-issues of Metallica's Master of Puppets, and was a little disappointed when the inner sleeves were split on one side as if someone had dropped the record in while holding the sleeve with one hand (you know the splits), except it was split on the right side (the open-edge of the album cover). I checked out the records, and there were definitely light scuffs on them (I still haven't decided if it is enough to send it back), but it wasn't anything too serious, depending on how uptight you are about such things.
Mofi is using some sort of paper sleeve with a plastic lining for these Metallica reissues - not the see-through plastic kind with the paper on one side (if you're familiar with Mofi sleeves).
Then I ordered Ride the Lightning. It also sounded fantastic, btw. But this also had the same problem. I had ordered it from a different retailer, and the packaging was superb (with about 8 other LPs, sandwiched between cardboard and encased in about three layers of bubble wrap).
Two other Mofi releases came with it - Madeleine Peyroux and Natalie Merchant. (No doubt this causes one to wonder about my musical tastes, but that is for another day. For now, let's say they are exceptionally broad). They had the same split on the sleeve, but no damage to the records.
I'll mention again that these records sounds FANTASTIC (although Puppets has some surface noise that I'm not sure about - it could be the scuffs, dunno). And I will continue to buy Mobile Fidelity records as long as they are releasing records I like (which isn't hard to do).
Does anyone have a similar experience?
