I recently purchased the Stereophile Test CD 3 to test my equipment and set up, and discovered that my speakers can't reproduce sound beyond the 16KHz point. I had my young son listen to make sure I had not some lost hearing at these frequencies and he could not hear anything either.
I even swapped out preamps in case I had a miss match between the pre and the amps. My current pre is a BAT VK5i which is a tube unit. I previously used a SS McIntosh, the CR 10. Both units presented the same result which is barely audible sound at the 16KHz tone and no sound at all at 20KHz. I am now assuming the speakers just are not reproducing these high frequencies.
So, my question is this.....can the issue be with the tweeters just not being able to reproduce these frequencies (the spec sheet states that it can) or can there be worn out components in the crossovers and a swap of old caps for new would do the trick? or can there be something else at play here I am not recognizing? The amps are monoblocks, B&K M200 Sonatas. Thank you.
