Looking for 4- or 6-ohm bookshelf speaker

Hope all is well with you.

Impedance is variable and no speaker is truly 4 ohm or 6 ohm. There is an impedance curve and the “nominal impedance” is an estimate base on that curve. That being said, something like the Revel Performa3 is listed as having a nominal impedance of 8 ohms but if you look, it is probably closer to 6 ohms and drops close to 4 ohms at its lowest point.

I am happy to help you hunt down what you are looking for, do you have a target price range? Given that 4ohm speakers will likely have frequencies that go as low as 2 ohms, often times much higher end products that assume very good amplification are the only ones that produce speakers with such demands. Can you explain why? There might be a different solution.

I happen to own 20 acres of forest next to my house, in which I have been slowly constructing a nicely detailed cabin. I came up with the idea of using marine batteries and a small solar panel to power DC interior/exterior lighting. It then occurred to me that I could create a sound system using a car stereo/receiver since they also operate on DC. At first I thought I'd get some car speakers from Crutchfield and mount them in a cabinet of my own making (I'm a carpenter with a large woodshop).

But, I soon realized that I would then have to do all the research/experimentation that a speaker manufacturer otherwise would: crossovers, wiring, damping, voicing, size of cabinet, etc. So, I called Crutchfield to see if they thought a home audio speaker would be compatible. Turns out they are, but because car audio is usually 2 ohms, they said I should try to find a speaker with a lower impedance.

I'm not looking for earth-shaking anything since an amp or sub would simply drain the batteries in a hurry. This would essentially be for radio only. I already ordered a car receiver, which actually came today, and my intent is to test this whole idea with my Monitor Audio Silver 2's from my living room setup (despite their 8 ohm rating).

For a price range, I'd say no more than $500-600/pair used, which means around $1000 retail.

Is this a harebrained idea or what?

Got it. That makes sense. As someone who has gone through the process of building my own speakers, you will not save money doing it.

Give the guys at TMRAudio a call. They have a few speakers that might fit the bill. Not sure if these Vienna Apustics will have a low enough impedance but they have a few pairs of older B&Ws which definitely do. Specifically, they have a pair of Matrix 805s which you might be able to haggle down to your price range that would be awesome.

I have bought two things from them and have nothing but good things to say.

Well, I just tried the MA's and there wasn't the slightest problem I could detect. I guess this means I'm not limited in my choices. Audiogon, here I come...

I've been consumed for the last few weeks deciding on some stand mounts for my Peachtree Nova 150. I'm trying to get a minimalist setup in my townhouse. I currently have a set of the B/W Matrix 1's on one of my other rigs at my country home. They're not the most handsome piece of furniture, but they sound amazing. I want to get another pair that would fit the decor. I have a local guy I may visit tomorrow to audition some Matrix 805's. He's asking 500$ U.S. I've talked to a couple other people about them, and they say I may be disapointed when comparing to the Matrix 1'S. But I have found myself going back and forth between the KEF Q350's and the LS50'S. Despite the rave reviews, I'm not sure if they are "twice" as the Q350'S considering the price difference.
