So, I very much like Iron Maiden but have never been a huge fan of one of the 80's albums, Seventh Son of the Seventh Son. I bought it on Cassette and thought it was an awful recording - and sadly there were a couple decent songs that were recorded so poorly that they were tough to listen too.
The Clairvoyant and Moonchild made the cut doe Flight 666 and they were awesome version so I went back and listened to digital versions of the same songs and thought the studio recordings still stunk.
Iron Maiden just released the first 8 albums on 180g vinyl and I figured that I would get all 8 to properly fill the collectors box but Seventh Son of the Seventh Son would not get listened too. I tried out both tracks, and am floored by the difference. This one album to me sounds so much better than the digital and analog cassette tracks. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, i streamed an ALAC file through my network player and the difference is stark. I went to my other system and played the cassette and it still sounded awful.
The highs are always a hair warmer with vinyl and a bit more open. But I have never heard the more detailed mids and a much more pronounced bass. The digital files always sounded a bit hollow and lacking in bass. No equalizer and no real difference on most other records vs digital other than slightly muddier bass And slightly warmer highs.
I have a Rega P3-24 with an Elys 2 into a Rega Brio R. The ALAC file was streamed from a Mac through a Marantz NA7004 to the Rega Brio R. Ultimately, I have never liked the digital recordings so I don't think it is the system.
What would be causing such a pronounced difference with this one album? It sounds so much better on vinyl than on the other two formats it makes me think they had to remaster this album despite saying they did not.
