Could be impedance but it might also be a connector mismatch. 3.5mm plugs and 1/8" plugs look similar but are different enough to cause poor connections if there is a mismatch between the size of plug and the size of the jack.

The Startech has a 3.5mm jack. Are you using a 1/8" plug?
