My first was an album of The Monkees, More of the Monkees. It was around $2.00 which I paid with quarters.
I've never lost track of what LPs I have. However, whenever I start going through them I find things that I have not listened to for a while and suddenly need to hear.
I have lost records, to my ADD, to mishap, to this and that. One thing that touching all my records is showing me is that I am open to selling quite a few.
I have a rule to never sell guitars as I often think of the guitars I sold but I never remember what I bought with the money I got from the guitars. So I am a bit surprised at how ready I am to pare down my music collection.
I think it was the 4 Joan Armatrading records (all pristine I might add) that gave me the hint.

I have never sold, traded or disposed of any recording added to my collection. I have the first LP I bought.
WOW! That is outstanding. I only wish it were so for me.

My collection has been increasing since that first (1968) purchase. It's now at ~3500 LP's and ~1200 CD's
I'm pretty aggressive when it comes to thinning the heard. About once a year I'll go through my entire collection and ask "Have I listened to this in the last two years?" If the answer is no I then ask "Will I listen to this in the next two years?" If the answer to that is no as well I'll sell it at the used CD store to buy something that I want.
I'm constantly finding LPs and CDs I didn't even know I had.
My thinking was to check out Wes Montgomery. I wanted to get one of his CDs for a long long time, but just kept forgetting. Then I was lookin at my CDs and guess what...I already have Wes Montgomery CDs.
I guess I don't need any more CDs or LPs. I don't even know what I have. I've got LPs I bought in 1985 that I haven't even opened yet. I've got CDs I've never even heard, or can't remember ever hearing them, or even knew I had them.
I find myself just listening to a few titles now-a-days. Say maybe 25 or 30. It's nice to have the other albums and I do appreciate it, but I really don't need them. I rarely listen to any CDs anymore (25% of the time maybe), and I've got some 130 MFSL CDs alone, and gold discs and collectors stuff, and the regular CDs.
Maybe I should thin out my collection as well. I never listen to 2/3rds of it anymore, maybe even more.
I do love music. I've just accumlated too much. I must have 100 LPs that I've never even heard. My collection isn't that big, maybe 700+ CDs and 250+ LPs. I don't know how you guys handle it with like 3000cds and 5000 LPs!! LOL :>)
And I just bought 'another pair' of speakers, very rare Sansui AS-300s and an equally rare Sansui GX-100 rack, which ended up being, to my suprise, brand spanking new still wrapped from the factory in 1979. Very Cool! I'm never ever going to buy another pair of speakers ever again. The only reason I got the 300s is because I'd been lookin for a pair for the last 5 years and...there they were! In nice cosmetic shape too.
I may eBay the MFSL and gold CDs, most of em anyway. Still have a '68 Camaro that's been on the blocks since '85. I've got a Fender Percision Bass Elete guitar and don't even play bass guitar. I think I need to clean house. It's almost like I can't even breath anymore.
'Stuff'.
One of these days I'm going to get rid of the accumulated stuff. Not complaining, I'm not a 'horder' LOL, it's just that I always used to buy everything new everytime I went back to work overseas because you can only carry so much 'stuff' and you get tired of carrying and shipping 'stuff'. That's how the CDs got accumulated. I just really liked the sound of the MFSL CDs and was in San Francisco when they dumped on the market, couldn't say no, bought 50 at $15 a pop.
