Hey yall- Im playing music now from my Mac laptop (on whatever the quality of Spotify downloads are by default) and just running that into some Edifier S1000DB speakers. These are active.
Ive been playing stuff just through my laptop speakers for a while, and it sounds good in comparison... but not great.

Any suggestions on how to maximize sound quality with this little set up? Ill need an EQ at a minimum, and figure out how to maximize the fidelity of Spotify downloads. I do have the general settings in Spotify set to high quality streaming, which I think is 320, but I this is independent of download quality. When I turn it up a little, even lush Donald Fagen tunes start to sound a little rough around the edges, so something isnt right.

Also, what kind of sound quality could I expect from building a system from scratch or with some of the components I mentioned (just a Mac laptop and those active speakers) for $400? $600? $1000?
How large is the jump in quality between these points? Seems like a game of diminishing returns ultimately... maybe at a much higher level than this.
Is it worth it to drop 5,000 and get some pretty decent level equipment? I prefer higher quality sound over something loud. Im not sure of the comparison, but a class AB 40 watt tube guitar amplifier level is plenty loud if that means anything to anyone here.

Thanks
