Okay, my post is really a bit more specific than its title implies, as it's only about how to do this using Firefox with the "Adblock plus" plugin. But since it identifies the name of the javascript (.js) file that causes the popup, I'm hoping that technically-inclined users of other browsers and/or popup blockers can chime in with their instructions of how to do this with their browser/popup blocker combo. That way, as many users as possible can block it.

These instructions only apply to Firefox. If you already have the "Adblock plus" plugin installed, you can skip to step 3.

1.) Install the "Adblock plus" plugin to Firefox, which can be found here.

2.) When asked to subscribe to a block list, choose one appropriate to your country/location (I use EasyList (USA)).

3.) Choose "Tools", "Adblock plus preferences" in Firefox.

4.) In the "Options" menu of the resulting dialog, enable one or both of "Show in toolbar" and/or "Show in status bar". This will cause a red stop sign icon to appear in the associated area. I just use the status bar as it's a bit less intrusive than the toolbar.

5.) Navigate to the Stereophile home page, http://www.stereophile.com. If you do this while reading these instructions, open up a separate browser tab, as you need the stereophile.com home page to be the current page when you block the popup per the instructions below.

6.) With the Stereophile home page as the current page in the current browser tab, right-click on the "Adblock plus" stop sign icon in the status bar or toolbar (as enabled in step 4 above).

7.) Choose "Open blockable items" from the context menu. This will open up a blockable items list at the bottom of the Firefox window. Enlarge this list (by dragging its top border) as necessary to make it easy to read. Maximizing Firefox may help.

8.) Scroll through the list to find the culprit, which is http://www.stereophile.com/subad.js. That's the Javascript code that opens the popup. Left-click on it to select it.

9.) Right-click and choose "block this item". You'll see a dialog box that suggests a wildcard set of files to block that's more general than what you want. If enabled, it would block many more items than you want to. However, the "custom" radio button has a text box next to it that will have the correct item, which is just this one file:

http://www.stereophile.com/subad.js

10.) That's the one you want. Select the "custom" radio button entry and click the "add filter" button.

11.) Close the blockable items window by clicking its red "close" button in the upper right of the blockable items window.

That's it. The popup is now blocked. If you want to kill more popups just for fun, go here and play the game (with sound enabled of course).
