I really like the ikea expedit, but I would rather spend money on records/ equipment at this point in my life. Its really solid if put on it's side, and i cut out some spare carpet foam to help dampen the vibrations. It works wonderfully for me, laying it on it's side, and setting my record player and integrated on top of the shelf. I think I could also squeeze a cd player up there as well. You could also opt not to install all the dividers and use part of the shelves for equipment, but I keep mine loaded with records.

and relatively inexpensive. I'm using Ikea Besta with vibration isolation material under the shelves.

I recently moved my Hi-Fi to a much better sounding room, and needed something to put it on. Some of the equipment generates significant heat, so I wanted to stay away from any type of enclosure, preferring open racks. After looking at as many options as I could, the Salamander Archetype seemed to be the obvious choice based on design, quality, and price. The trouble was that I didn't think my wife would like the exposed hardware, and threaded support posts. So I've ordered a Quadraspire Evo 5 rack unit at about double the price of a Salamander. Time will tell if I or my wife will like it.

When it came down to it, there was not as much choice as I would have liked, considering my budget, and other criteria.

Thanks for the input. I've been finding that it's been hard to find something to satify my wife, the budget, and functionality requirements myself.

I have a Tech-Craft base unit that my 60" HDTV sits on which has two open shelves underneath for preamp, power amp, cable box, CD player, DVD player etc.

It is steel and glass, but Tech-Craft also has units in various wood veneer finishes. I bought mine direct from Tech-Craft, but they apparently are not selling direct anymore. Many of their units seem to be on Amazon and racksandstands.com
