I think you may have discovered the issue of bass for the sake of bass, & bass as music that reflects more closely what is on the original recording.

While thunder may be impressive, it seldom is musical.
Once you have developed an ear for musical bass, it becomes quite difficult to suffer flabby, boomy, boxy sounding bass.

the bass on the musical fidelity isn't THAT exaggerated and isn't bothersome to me in any way. I've decided to use the musical fidelity for now, but I can always switch to the phono stage in the XSP-1 if I need to. (the phono stage in the XSP-1 was described as an audiophile phono stage at a good price.)

When I used that phono stage, I thought the bass was natural; never considered it overblown.

It has been over a year since I used it; I sold it with my MMF-2

Right now I am using the Musical Fidelity M1 ViNL With the MMF-7, which is superb.

yeah, I was looking at the M1 Vinyl phono stage. how do you like it? looks solid. how is the overall sound and how do you think it improves over the V-LPS 2?
