Hi, I'm pretty new to this whole speaker and surround sound stuff. Right now I'm running 6 speakers through my stereo. Two are from an old record player set which are a three speaker enclosure, two are from the stereo I'm running all of the through which is from like 99'. And the last two are some random bookshelf speakers I found in the basement.

As you can see none of these really provide me with a good quality surround sound experience, the quality of sound isn't all that great. So in a few days i'll be building my own computer and I'll be connecting all of these to it, but I'd like to in the near future buy higher quality speakers. I've tried in the past few days looking at reviews etc. but there are so many different brands and models and it's getting kinda confusing with the lows and mids and highs. So what I'm looking for is maybe a good review site and a few suggestion on what to look at as far as quality, and then i can decide which would fit my room best. I'm looking in the $150 to $250 range, and maybe to $300 for a pair, but I'd like to keep it a little lower. I'm looking for maybe two bookshelf speakers right off, then I'll get two surround speakers, then two smaller ones or one center channel. My motherboard has 6 analog ports, so i'd like to fill all of those. And also could someone post a link to a site that explains all of the stuff I should know, like the mids, Hz, frequencys, etc. Thanks in advance, Gavin.

And I have one more question, which would be better, a surround sound system that has 4 of those small cubes and a woofer, or what I'm doing having a couple bookshelf speakers, two surround speakers, and two small speaker or one center channel? Thanks again, Gavin.
