Okay, I want to clarify something:
I have a PS3 delivering and audio and video signal to my Marantz Pre/Pro. I have made an adjustment in my settings so that the PS3 is outputting an unprocessed audio signal to the pre/pro and I am taking advantage of the Marantz audio processors to process that signal in the correct DSP like Dolby TrueHD in the case of a movie or simply use the Marantz DAC over the PS3 DAC for processing a CD.
Before I made that setting adjustment on the PS3, the Marantz said it was receiving and outputting a 5.1 channel stereo signal when I would play a Dolby Digital or TrueHD movie.
How does the decoding of a 5.1 channel stereo signal via HDMI differ from decoding that unprocessed signal from the DVD player? Where does processing the DSP fit into this relative to the traditional DA conversion?
It appears that if you input and Analog signal, Audyssey is not applied. If I was to upgrade to an Oppo BDP 105, I would be sending 5 flawlessly processed analog signals that would have no room correction applied. Given how big of a difference Audyssey makes, I would expect to hear a pretty dramatic decline in Audio quality if I am understanding this correctly.
Basically, if I am not taking advantage of the Oppo's DAC because the Marantz is reprocessing the signal, is there any reason at all for me to consider upgrading to the Oppo? In the end, the PS3 is a pretty darn nice Blu-ray transport and if a slightly nicer transport is what I am getting with the Oppo, it doesn't seem worth the extra $900.
For 2 channel, I get it completely with balanced outputs. I just don't see a benefit to multi-channel.
