Hard drive GREATLY altering audio quality

There has to be some settings you need to change. Are you using the headphone jack for optical out to the DAC or USB?
I am using USB for the musical fidelity and HDMI for the sr7005. Both show up in the systems menu under sound. Are there setting for the hard drive? Or is it that USB that you are talking about. It is USB 2.0 should I have gone firewire? This mini doesn't have thunderbolt.
I believe there are four USB ports on two buses. Make sure the DAC and Harddrive do not share a USB bus.
I don't have much of an answer on the HDMI side.

Thanks. One of those sites suggest that external is better but not on either of the macs that I have.
