Received the following enticing offer from Linn this morning:

Let us help you to enjoy your most musical summer ever by going Aktiv with your Linn system.

For a limited time, receive free Aktiv cards with every purchase of selected Linn power amplifiers. Plus, we'll give you enough Aktiv cards to make your entire system fully active at no extra cost.

Going Aktiv is a simple, cost effective way to maximise the performance of your Linn playback system. A channel of amplification plus an Aktiv card is used for each drive unit, replacing the passive crossover in the loudspeaker. This ensures that each drive unit receives exactly the information it's meant to have, for more precise reproduction of your music.

Once again it seems that when marketing man jumps into the driving seat the truth jumps straight into the back. I don't think one needs an engineering degree to realize that a crossover "ensures that each drive unit receives exactly the information it's meant to have" regardless of whether it is active or passive, in other words placed before the power amplification or after.

Could it be that what he meant to say was:

Going Aktiv is a simple, cost effective way to maximize our revenue-per-customer. A channel of amplification is used for each drive unit rather than one-per-speaker. This ensures a two-to-fourfold increase in the number of amplifiers sold for a nice multiplicatory effect on our bottom line.

I certainly intend to 'get aktiv' this summer, but rather than jumping invisible hurdles while simultaneously playing air guitar and smelling my own armpit (which, judging by the expression on this guy's face is every bit as difficult as it looks) I am leaning towards breaking out my KOSTUM and going swimming with the KIDS
