Bought Bill Frisell's EXCELLENT "History, Mystery" 2-CD album. Unlike his great collaboration with Motian & Ron Carter on Nonesuch, this record is more of a compositional album. I'm so impressed by this one. I listened to it in my new basement listening room/study, lights off. One of those rare records that penetrates into your thought patterns & incites you to think that YOU are dreaming up that music. I know I'll have this record on when I'm writing. There's also a nimble take on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." Can't wait to see him next week at Le Poisson Rouge, as a part of JVC Jazz Fest.
I would have put up this post in the jazz thread, only if it weren't for the fact that I wanted to emphasize that a lot of interesting composition is going on outside of the strictly "classical music" domain. A few years ago, the best original new classical composition of the year could be heard - IMHO - in Glenn Kotche's album "Mobile" (Kotche is the drummer for Wilco.) Nico Muhly, who is one of the most interesting young American composers at least in my estimation, often collaborates with Bjork, etc. Which is all to say that we're living in interesting times as far as musical composition goes (Stephen - I think you'll like Golijov a lot... it's just too bad his works aren't available on vinyl!) There's rampant and disrespectful miscegenation of genres, which I really really like (except in indie rock, which has become a bit homogeneous as far as musical roots are concerned. And hip-hop has gotten stale & boring...)
