The other thing which I'm scared to mention... :)
I have young kids with a severe disrespect for personal property (outrageous!) so I'm considering putting the amp, cd player, and speakers on top of the fridge in a corner of an echoey kitchen.
Is that terrible? Is there a rule that you shouldn't put the speakers too close together, or that they shouldn't be too high up? Is it foolish to get this nice equipment then stick it somewhere like this?
My wife wants me to just get a $35 cd player and be done with it but I've got a bit of an itch and see a longer term value in a setup like this.
Happy to hear your thoughts.
to relegate nice equipment to such a position in the house. Can't you hang shelving on the walls in a better listening venue? That way you can get the equipment out of reach and still have adequate placement for listening.
By the way, for a first system what you have selected will be very nice.
How far apart should the speakers be in a 12x12ft open (echoey) room?
five feet would be optimal. However, a square room is going to present its own issues which it sounds like you may not be able to deal with.

Will these speakers hit powerful low notes or do I need to add a sub for that? Will this amp power a nice sub?
