Hola,

I want to fire up some old gear that's been lying fallow in dry storage for a long time; anywhere from 13 to 20 years.

I've heard people talk about "reforming" capacitors with a thing called a Variac which, apparently, can be used to slowly bring line voltage up over time in order to properly "reform" capacitors, so they work like they used to.

It makes sense, and is a common thing in industry for other purposes (like powering up tube amplifiers and guitar amps,) but I've also seen internet blurbs about applying low voltage and actually harming electronic gear.

So, I'm "paralyzed."

Is this process real?

The Variac website was no help with choosing which model or how to time the power-up.

Looking for anyone besides DUP who may have knowledge, insight, or experience in this.
