I love Christmas music and have a decent collection. I would appreciate it if you took some time to share your favorites.
In no particular order, let me start with What I Really Want for Christmas by Brian Wilson. First, the cd cover is the shiniest I have in my entire collection. The music is pure Brian, which is to say wonderful. The title song is wistful and wonderful, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is done straight with great rythym, and Oh Holy Night has Brian singing strong. Most of the titles are traditional and done in a straightforward manner. But oh, those harmonies!
Another favorite is more obscure, Christmas Time by the dB's. You may have to search for it under Chris Stamey, but it is available for pennies via Amazon. Again, the title song really works, with the dB's pounding out a power pop original. Alex Chilton shows up to sing The Christmas song, with just his own acoustic guitar. This is killer and one of my favorite Christmas songs. I really enjoy Big Star and Chilton, but this track is unusual in that there is not a trace of irony in his performance. And another nod to O Holy Night, this time sung by Peter Holsapple. I did not know he had the chops for the song, but he sings it like it was written. A toss off, but a fun one, is Syd Straw singing I'm Always Touched by Your Presents Dear. Wonderful attitude and name dropping, and a great, who cares delivery on the vocals.
Finally, it is not Christmas without Ella. My favorite voice in the world. Well, Alison Kraus can give her a little competition, but Ella is the shiznit as far as female vocalists go chez Trey. There is little jazz or blues in this record, just Ella straight. Man it is wonderful.
I look forward to hearing your favorites!
