Horowitz once said, "Not everything is a competition." The truth and importance of that statement notwithstanding, my nomination for the best Christmas album everyone must hear is "A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert" Sony Classical CD 1992.

The featured performers are Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, the Wynton Marsalis Septet, and Andre Previn backed by the Orchestra of St. Lukes, a boys choir and chorus. The repertoire includes something for everyone and the sonics are excellent. Most importantly, the performances are brimming with energy and joyfulness. Whether you prefer the Mozart "Alleluja", "Silent Night", or Mel Torme's "Christmas Song", you should buy and play the recording if only to hear the ensemble presentation of "Go, Tell it on the Mountain". No one's Christmas should be without it.
