I'm interested in putting together a good sounding setup on the cheap. the further south of $500 the better.

I'm thinking integrated stereo tube amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers, but the options are quite frankly overwhelming and I feel like I'm not getting anywhere in the selection process.

Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.

I don't know if anyone has listened to a pair of M-Audio Studiophile av-40's, but thats what I listen to currently and I find them to be pretty good for the money I paid for them. ($125) That's my reference point for good audio... probably a little weak, but you've gotta start somewhere I guess...

I mainly listen to lossless (flac) through my computer and pmp (cowon d2). Smallish room, moderate levels. alot of acoustic type music, instrumental, blues, a little hip hop (not a bass freak though).

Summary: simple tube amp and 2.0 speaker setup in the $400 range.

(willing to build the amp if someone has some good schematics and the speakers too if you've a convincing reason why it's worth it)
