With the Presidential election less than a year away, I still find it hard to get excited about any of the candidates from either party. Up until a few months ago I never would have given the Republicans any chance to win back the White House, and that the hugely unlikable Hilary Clinton would be the next POTUS.
But then yet another senseless mass shooting led to the same old knee-jerk reactions. One of these days a politician will seriously blow out a knee from said knee-jerk reaction. But when President Obama stated that he would consider Executive Action on gun control, and then Mrs. Clinton echoed that sentiment, I believe they have now handed the White House back to the Republicans, perhaps for a long time.
The millions of conservative Republicans who stayed home, rather than vote for McCain or Romney, will most certainly show up once the NRA gets involved. I can see the ads already: "The President and the Democrat Nominee both think it is okay to tamper with your Constitutional rights by way of Executive Action. Do we dare ever to put one in the White House Again?"
For the record I am neither a gun owner or NRA member. It just vexes me when the same old arguments for gun control are trotted out each time there is a senseless shooting, even though what is proposed would have done nothing to prevent the tragedy. I do question the concept of "Gun Free Zones" and the little stickers on business, school, and church doorways saying no handguns allowed. It seems like all that does is guarantee to a would be shooter that they will have zero opposition.
How much different would things have been if in Aurora, in the gun free theater, ignoring the little "No Guns Allowed" sticker, an off duty cop or ex-marine with a conceal carry permit, upon the first sign of any weapon in the loser Holmes' hand, brandishes their old Colt 1911A and pops Holmes in the chest with 7 rounds of .45 ACP. Same goes for Columbine, Newtown, outh Carlina, etc.
When Hilary shouted out, in her fingernails on chalkboard screech, "Take back the Second Amendment", one wonders what exactly she meant, since for the most part people of her ilk would like to pretend the 2nd Amendment doesn't exist, or that it does not mean "the People" when it says "The People".
With so many issues facing us these days, it is sad that single-issue voting is so prevalent. I think at heart most of us are single issue voters, whether we would admit it or not. Someone might be the most brilliant, gifted, charismatic leader to ever come along, but a single statement on their actual beliefs regarding, guns, abortion, gay rights, global warming, etc., would doom their campaign.
