I've had a great experience with ANC headphones (Sony WH-1000XM3) and a mid-range portable DAC (iFi xDSD). The Sonys are 47 ohm powered, 16 unpowered. They have a published frequency response of 4 - 40,000 Hz. Even in powered ANC mode, the difference in music quality is pretty remarkable. Highs are crisper without being sizzly. Lows are strong and precise and mids are very present. The sound stage feels both broader and a bit deeper. I don't regret the purchase of the DAC at all.
On the higher end, I also own Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX cans. They're 300 ohm with a published 10 - 41000 Hz frequency response. The iFi is fully capable of powering them and they're yet another notch up in sound quality.
So, the purchase of the DAC has done more than enhance my iPhone listening. It's given me exciting new audio experiences across the spectrum.
