The PSB Alpha PS1 or P3 Speakers (powered or unpowered) are very good desktop speakers.

I am running a pair of SVS Prime Wireless that are paired with a SB2000 sub and I'm quite impressed with the ability of these small speakers. They replaced a much larger system and I'm more than pleased with the results. Otherwise, you might take a look at the offerings from other mid-market brands like Audioengine, Kantu, PSB, and Klipsch.
