I went to see Ethan Winer on Saturday in Buttfuck Connecticut. Why do all forum members (DUP and Ethan) live in the boondocks, the bowls of their respective states? Why can't you guys move closer to civilization (New York)?
It took me 2 and a half hours to get to Ethan, but the trip was well worth it. Ethan is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He's a very open, and honest guy, a gracious host and very good company.
Ethan has a recording studio in his house. It's a first time I've seen a recording studio, so that was quite educational. There are all kinds of things you can do during a recording and mixing process. That was great! We played around with audio compression schemes, trying to see if we could reliably tell the difference, Ethan told me about recording techniques, and so on. That was a real treat.
Ethan's house is covered with Real Traps. He obviously believes in the product he sells because his living room is covered top to bottom with these things (not to mention his recording studio). In fact, I have a feeling Ethan threatened to bury his wife alive in the woods somewhere because this is the first time I met a woman who did not object to acoustic panels all over the living room. I think women are genetically programmed to object to stuff like that, so I figure there's got to be something fishy going on for her not to object to such an intrusion. 
Speaking of traps, one thing I noticed about the sound both in Ethan's living room and his recording studio is that there are no resonances or echoes of any type. I always thought that if you treat the room, you will deaden it and that would mean that speakers would beam the sound, rather than envelop your senses. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ethan's living room setup (a very modest, higher end consumer grade and pro-setup) imaged better than almost anything I've ever heard. It imaged so well, I kept asking him whether the center speaker (he's got a home theater setup) was playing (it wasn't). The envelopment was simply amazing. I didn't expect that from such a modest system. I was completely immersed when I played Misere by Allegri, I felt as though I was seated in the cathedral. It was absolutely beautiful.
We hung out for quite some time. I got home at 1am, being really glad I took the time to come out. Thanks for being such a gracious host, Ethan. Great experience, great company.
