TL;DR: For a stereo music listening purposes, what's the best way to connect active monitors to my TV which has optical, HDMI and 3.5mm out?
This is not for mixing use; but for home entertainment.

Hello! I could use some help with this seemingly simple question.

My setup:
Recently bought a pair of JBL 305P monitors and since I don't have any other supporting equipment, I hooked them to my TV using 3.5mm to 1/4 dual TRS.

I've an xbobx (for blu ray) and a raspberry pi playing movies and music (soon to be replaced by a PC) connected to TV (Sony 4K). So my TV acts as a hub and I'm happy with this setup.

Expectation:
A setup tailored more for music than movies.

Assumption (maybe grossly wrong):
I'd get better sound quality, all things being equal, through HDMI or optical than 3.5mm.

Question:
Do you suggest I should just leave my setup as is or get something that can take HDMI or optical in and provide me remote volume control? Like an AVR or a preamp?

P.S: I'm planning to audition these speakers at home soon: Focal 65 and KEF LS50W (which is the max I'm willing to spend now.) So my setup isn't high end and I'd like to avoid spending money on something that doesn't warrant a necessity
