I suggest that you look at the Harman-Kardon 3490 stereo receiver.
It runs around $450 and is very good; better than many of the amplifiers you can get for the same price.
Thanks for the reply commsysman. You would recommend the H-K over the Music Hall a15-2? I've also found a few tube amps on ebay for under $500....notably this Music Angel XDSE: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Music-Angel-XDSE-EL34-x-4-Class-Stereo-Integrated-Valve-Tube-Amplifier-PUS-/290708858818?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D110971254000%26ps%3D54
I'm not sure about getting into tube amps at this price point. They seem to really vary in quality. Thoughts?
Personally heard them right next to one another. They are both very very good and pretty similar sounding. The Audio Refinement is a little more warm through the midrange while the Arcam seems more detailed and balanced in it's presentation.
I think you'd like either.
Thanks for the comments everyone. i found a used Audio Refinement Complete on Audiogon and received it today. Back in french 2 channel bliss :)
