Hi, I'm a former audiophile coming back to high-end-ish audio after a 25 year absence. I used to have a rather nice Linn/Musical Fidelity/Spica system back in the late '80s/early '90s, 'til I foolishly sold it in a fit of pique over digital taking over (plus needing some money at the time). :(
But now, analog's come back! And I miss my old system and how my music *used* to sound, i.e. awesome and involving. So I want to get back into it, starting with getting the front-end right (turntable). I used to have a Linn Sondek/Basik tonearm/Grado MM cartridge combo. Kind of a lower-end Sondek, but it sounded great to me, warm and musical. What to get now to recreate that?
I did read up on the choices. And, it's confusing. To me, anyway.
Seems like there's a JAZILLION turntable choices compared to back in the day, even/especially at the very high-end. Prices at or near the top have skyrocketed. And Linn has apparently gotten quite greedy with the LP12, trying to march its customers down a very long and expensive upgrade path… $25K USD when all is said and done? Really? (oh, and the name 'Klimax' for their ultimate level LP12 isn't exactly subtle, now is it. The marketing boys must've been into the scotch that day.)
I have plenty of budget to spend, yes, but that doesn't mean I want to get taken for a ride.
So given all that, looks like there's four ways to go about this:
1) Buy a used LP12. But I kinda don't want to do this, it's what I did last time around, albeit with good results. I dunno, at a certain age, you kinda just want shiny and new, I guess.
2) Shell out the $4K plus for a 'Magik' level LP12, and start trodding Linn's expensive upgrade path. But I'd feel like a bit of a sucker doing this. And where exactly is the point of diminishing returns?
3) Buy a bare-chassis new LP12, and selectively fit it out and upgrade it in the most cost-effective manner. Maybe a Rega RB330 tonearm, good MM cart, Lingo power supply, etc. Whatever makes good 'bang for the buck' sense.
4) Say 'screw you Linn, ya greedy bastiges' and look around for either 'good enough' alternative 'tables (Rega Planar 3 w/power supply upgrade?), or 'tables that might give a 'Magik' LP12 a run for its money for less money, or even beat it… things like the Clearaudio Concept, SOTA Comet, VPI Scout, Michell GyroDec, etc. Whatever sounds musical and involving, instead of cold/analytical… don't want more 'digital sound'.
What do you guys think, what's the best way to attack this? You kinda see where I'm coming from.
