Your budget will require some careful consideration of components. I would definitely start looking at used equipment, online, and in local pawn shops (inexpensive electronics can be found there). Sorry, but I'm not sure what to recommend as far as new equipment goes.
Essentially you'll need a turntable (record player), amplification (a used receiver with a phono input should work), and loudspeakers. Good luck!
Consider this if you want new: Music Hall MMF-USB1 turntable, $250 (comes with cartridge & built-in phono preamp), and then hook that up directly to self-powered AudioEngine A2 speakers, $200. Or their larger ones, A5+, $350. Nice system either way, total $450 or upgraded $600. Guaranteed to please.
I suggest the folowing;
!) A Harman-Kardon AVR 1565 receiver ($209 from Amazon)
2) The Music Hall turntable ($250)
3) A pair of Pioneer BS-22 speakers ($130) ...very good speakers for a price that is a real steal!
