I'm looking for recommendations for recordings of the Berg Violin Concerto. (I know this is one of Art Dudley's favorite pieces, thus the shout-out in the subject) I have the Perlman/Ozawa one, and it just doesn't grab me. The recording is typically bad 1970s DG, and Perlman doesn't sound like he actually likes the piece of music (Both Ozawa and Perlman sound much better on the other piece/flip side, which is Stravinsky's violin concerto).
I've poked around on Arkivmusic, and the ones that seem like they might be more to my liking are the Grumiaux one and the Mutter one. I have Grumiaux's recordings of the Bach violin concerti and the Mozart violin concerti, and they're great, and his tone is absolutely gorgeous. I've seen Mutter live once or twice, and she's a great player, and her recording has gotten good reviews, for both playing and sound.
Anyone have any recommendations? I'd prefer CD, if only because most of my listening these days is through my iPod and a headphone amp, rather than in my full system, but if there's something that's LP only (or SACD or DVD), I'll certainly consider it if it's readily obtainable.
thanks,
Lionel
