Once upon a time, about 6 years ago, i had some time and energy to put into my audio system, and built up a pretty classic setup that consists of a pair of heavily modded AR-2ax speakers, with new cabinets, new crossovers, and an upgraded tweeter, paired with a sansui 8080db amplifier. I love this system, and it sounds great. you know. 50% of the time. the other 50% of the time it either doesnt work, or only comes through one channel, or the mids dont come through etc.....
long story short, i simply dont have the time to continue maintaining these speakers, and i need to get a new updated system thats more reliable. i know a fair amount about active studio monitors, but for home audio systems my contemporary knowledge is stuck at zero. im hoping to get some advice on how to get the best sound within my budget. i know this is a subjective question and i could get 50 different answers, but i really am struggling to find a starting point, so some advice would be greatly appreciated. here are my parameters:
my budget: $1500-$3000
what im looking for: i play a lot of classical and electronic music, but i also like to throw parties in my (small) apartment, so i need something thats kind of a a good all rounder, but with enough bump to fill a big room without sounding hollow. i unfortunately do also care about the aesthetics in the room, and want something that will look good (anybody have experience with the klipsch capitol heresy iii speakers? they might be a tad out of my budget, but look great to me).
advice i need: my understanding is that the best sound i can get with this budget will be going for a classic setup of 2 speakers and an amp, either paired with a preamp - or i can upgrade the system with a pre amp down the road...... but i know technology is always changing, would i be better off now looking at active speakers? or a surround system? i dont know, but im open to both of these idea if people think theyre worth looking at. does anyone have a speaker/amplifier combo theyd recommend me researching at this price point?
Thanks!
