Well it seems that most, if not all, of my previous attempts to stir up some interest in what's going on right under our noses over at archive.org regarding the advancement of high end audio has fallen on deaf ears (or is that blind eyes?).
So I'm going to give this one last shot. Forget burning a DVD-Audio disc or even downloading a 2 or 3 gigabyte show, how about just downloading one sample song in a 24 bit, 96 kHz format and giving it a listen? I'm pretty sure that many of you have the computer hardware; i.e. broadband connection, hard drive, soundcard and a fairly decent computer audio playback system; and the know how.
Just indulge me a little and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you will hear.
Here's what you do:
First you have to download the song. The link for a really nice recoding is Charlie Hunter Trio - Jazz Standard, New York, NY February 17th, 2006, as you can see this a very recent show, this past Friday to be exact, and a great recording. Once you open the link, click on any of the audio file download links (I recommend ch2006-02-17t04) and save the file to your hard drive. The file will be in a lossless compression file format known as "flac" and will have to be decoded back to a wave (*.wav) file format for most media players to be able to play it. The link for the flac utility is FLAC Frontend. Don't worry the flac file is safe, virus free, free of charge and very small plus it works great.
Once you download and decode the file give the song a listen and then let me know what you think about the sound quality. (If you also happen to like Charlie Hunter that would be a nice bonus) And remember that this is not a "professional" recording. I say if the record companies won't give us high resolution discs we'll just have find ways to make them ourselves.
