Can't really imagine doing this unless your primary turntable has a history of blowing up on you. In which case, the solution would not be to purchase a back-up table, but rather to get rid of the unreliable primary one for something better.

Most anyone I know of (who isn't a DJ) who has multiple 'tables does so because they enjoy different set-ups/sound styles. AND they're addicted to turntables. AND they're kinda rich.

IF your VPI ever breaks down then get one to tide your over if it is going to be weeks for repair. At any given time you can go out and get an inexpensive table if you need one. Otherwise, total waste of money.

That being said, sounds like you may have developed a mild addiction to audio equipment. As someone who also suffers from that addiction, I quite understand. I desperately want an Ayre V-5xe and a pair of Manley Labs Snapper monoblocks. Never mind that this would be a waste of $12K, I live in a modest NYC apartment, lack space to store them and neither would even physically fit in my current rack....I still WANT them.

I'll bet a week's pay that the Musical Fidelity M6si would sound better, cost $9000 less and fit in your space.

Order one and try it for a couple of weeks. I bet you won't return it.

Thanks guys but I disagree a little and I will tell you why.

I have very recently started buying used vinyl and I try to buy records without deep scratches/pits but it is sometimes difficult to tell just how bad a scratch is. So, rather than risk damaging the stylus on my present set-up I would rather have a cheaper turntable with a cheaper cartridge and cheaper stylus to test out my used vinyl buys. Would rather replace a $40 stylus than a $300 one. Yes, I know I could just buy a cheaper cart for the VPI but I don't want to keep swapping things over just to test a suspect record. I think in the long run buying a cheaper turntable to test used vinyl will be a benefit.
The used record store I go to does have equipment to test their used records but I would say it wasn't considered modern in 1970!! Their stuff is old, dirty and poor quality and I very much doubt it would do me any good to try to listen to one of their used records on their equipment.
So,in buying a cheaper TT, I would have a cheap "test" set-up and it would do double duty as back up if needed.

Thanks again guys and, as always, your input is much appreciated.

David
