Like Stereo reproduction, those who thrive on sound quality are the minority, not the majority. I'd estimate MAYBE 15% of people demand pristine or better than average sounding audio.

Never did think much whoever did Billy Joel's multi-track mixing. Actually, as man had greater amount of tape tracks (70's+) to record with, away went wide stereo and such.

A friend and I were talking about Billy Joel's songs. He rambled off lyrics like he wrote the songs. That actually amazed me, because I have to sometimes struggle to comprehend lyrics. I guess I'm more interested and focus on music/audio quality.

Some of Billy Joel's multi-tracks escaped, I enjoyed mixing what I could. But his "Piano Man", it was like I added new life to the song, instruments I never heard before! I asked my friend who knew the lyrics to listen asked if he heard anything different with my stereo mix. He said the vocals sounded different. I asked myself, what, he didn't hear the added instruments!?
This is why I believe people enjoy "music" for different reasons.

I look at who won a Grammy, such as Bob Ludwig. He's okay, but nothing who excels in remastering quality. I say, it's more content than audio quality that wins Grammys.
