I installed a Sony DVD burner in my Dell Laptop and then installed Audio DVD creator per TaterBones recommendations and wha la...2496 music on +R media just like he promised. Saved them as WAV 2496 pcm. The software is $40. The Sony burner cost me $60.
I am using an Echo Indigo 2496 IO card (driver 7.3) for recording and the sound is very good and played first time in my Sony 755 DVD/SACD player. The 2 tracks I burned played great. Not a single hitch. but, this is only a short test run.
Now I have to wonder why this is not the defacto hi-rez standard rather than all the dedicated player formats that are out their. I have some recording projects coming up in early December for my local high schools bands in the area that will be recorded 2496 and then I will compare them to the redbook versions and see if I can really tell a difference.
2 weeks later and a real recording project...
Now I have issues coming up recording 2496 files with Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 9.0d. I have had no issues when recording at redbook rates, but now the increased resolution at 2496 has caused my live recordings to just stop on their own and for frequent clicks to appear in the recording at varying intervals. It appears to happen as the recording time is extended to past 15 minutes.
I should add that for the first time the Sony Sound Forge recording meters seem to have a latency issue as they are not tracking the actual musical peaks from the live performace. The meters from the Echo control panel are tracking accurately.
Sony seems to think I have some registry issues and need a new install, but I am inclined to think this is more possible "virtual memory" or too small a RAM issue? I am lost at this point, so for now this issue of live recording in my laptop at 2496 is not just plug and play for now.
I use Norton Utilities and Anti-Virus and my Dell laptop runs all my other apps quickly and efficiently with no issues. I have over 100 gigs of HD space available, unused.
Audio DVD creator continues to work great. It is a steal at $40.
I can also tell you that the increased resolution is easy to hear as lower level audio details are easy to discern as well as the distinct clarity of audience sounds. Applause has a crispness and detail not heard in redbook. I just hope to get my recording issues resolved.
I gave copies of my DVD+Rs to our band director and it played without a hitch in his DVD player. I will never again do a recording without taking my Sony DAT as a redbook backup.
addendum: One Hoffman forum participant recommended I increase my virtual memory which I did to 3 gigs with a 4 gig max setting. I'll see if that matters.
