I've used a Grado for nearly 7 years and it's great. I haven't heard Soundsmith but they are the same technology and similar build. They tend to be a little noisier however you're rewarded for your forgiving it with MC like detail and ambiance and MM like punch and swing. If you don't plan on investing in top notch MC ancilleries you really can't beat a MI design. I don't know why more high end companies don't specialize in them. Other than that whole thing about naked kings.
Go for it.
While the turnaround time was a bit long at 5 weeks, I have been enjoying great performance from that modest cart. Having a handmade cartridge from that company also means they do concern themselves with their customers on a more personal basis as well.
I do think its a great balance between an MM and MC design. I'll be coming back to the VPI Zephyr in a few months for sure.
