After loosing two woofers when my Adcom GFA5500 dumped 45 & 90 volts of direct current into the left & right channels, I'm wondering how often this happens. In my many decades of chasing better sound, this is a first, and I can't recall any Stereophile reviewers mentioning this type of failure.
Being unsure if it's worth repairing the 15 year old amp, I decided to go full circle back to the tubes I began with in the '60s -- which I remember well, thank you. I'm going to put my trust into the output transformer insulation to protect my speakers, rather than another failed solid-state protection circuit, this time around.
Any other interesting stories about what we've been smokin' in our hobby?
