Greetings all. Great site and forum, glad to have found it.
A little background-
I'm kind of a newbie. In the 70's & 80's I became interested in Hi Fi. I first built my own enclosures, bought designs, drivers and x-overs from a catalogue, no internet in that era. Then moved up? to a pair of 901's and experimented with subs and equalizers and out of phase rears, all driven by Realistic, Panasonic, and Marantz gear.
For the past decade I've lived on my boat with only a Kenwood auto receiver/cd and a pair of Bose 151's. Satisfying enough given the space and environmental limitations.
I've just bought a house and the absolute first priority is an audio system. I'm on a low-end budget, living on a small pension.
My first purchase was a pr of Magnepan MMGs. They are in transit, not here yet. Fell in love with the planar sound long ago though I have not actually auditioned the MMGs. If I find the MMGs need a bass boost I'll consider adding a Mirage S8 sub.
I was given a Yamaha Receiver, RX-V870, Natural Sound. It's a 90's vintage in great condition. I'm using it now with the little 151's. I'm not planning to use it as a HT setup, strictly 2 channel use. I'm hoping it will drive the maggies ok because a new amp/receiver is not in the budget for awhile.
I am looking for a used CDP. Marantz, NAD, or Rega are my choices at present.
Any suggestions or observations on how this equipment combo will perform together is appreciated.
A quandry is the location of the system. I suspect extensive experimentation will be required.
My LR is 25'x 15'x 16'h vaulted, all hard surfaces, hardwood flooring, stone fireplace, with large windows, minimal furniture.
The dining/kitchen areas are open to the LR, equaling a total dimension of 25'x 28'x 16'h.
My office, or possible dedicated listening room?, is 12'x 12'x 7.5'h, carpeted, with windows on 2 sides. Not sure which would be more suitable acoustically for the MMGs.
I envision the maggies filling the LR with an airy, wide sound stage, but the reality may prove different.
Musical tastes: Pink Floyd, James Taylor, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Byrd, Mark Knopfler, Hendrix, Traffic, Santana, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, John Williams, Norah Jones, etc.
Thanks
