Field Goals

When I think about how I spent my time this weekend — eating and drinking with friends, listening to music, watching the Giants beat the Cowboys to gain sole possession of first place in the NFC East — I really have no complaints. These are all great things. Why then, when you ask me how my weekend was, do I sigh and say: "It was okay, I guess"?

Best Integrated for $3k or below? Krell KAV-400i vs. Musical Fidelity A5

Any owners/users of either of the two listed integrated amps have any thoughts on their sound/musicality? Each generates what appears to be relatively high current power at 200+ watts/ch. Krell reviews very well in Stereophile and elsewhere. Musical Fidelity A5 appears to be an interesting candidate as well. I am still choosing speakers, but leaning towards Joseph Audio RM22si Mk.2's (see similar post in loudspeaker forum), which are spec'd at 8 ohm nominal (6 ohm min) w/ sensitivity of ~88db. I have a smallish room of approximately 12'6 x 11'6 x 9'.

Any current (or previous) Joseph Audio RM22 owners out there?

I'm considering a pair of JA RM22si Mk.2's for a 2ch stereo system in a room that is approximately 12'6"l x 11'5"w x 9'h. I listen to predominantly jazz, small ensemble/chamber music, female vocal and acoustic pop/rock. As a result, I would happily trade off slightly rolled-off low end for transparency, neutrality and soundstage/imaging capabilities, particularly in the mids and treble frequencies. Based on reviews (professional and consumer both), the JA RM 22's seem to possess the characteristics I'm looking for.

Manufacturer's setup of review samples

I've yet to see this pet peeve of mine addressed in this RnR section - you're reading an equipment review in one the high end audio magazines and the reviewer is recounting about how the team from the factory worked so hard to get the equipment setup just right in his listening room. Wow, that's great! But then there is no mention of whether this outstanding treatment is extented to all customers or just those whose opinions will be published in a major audio magazine.

Magnatune Offers High-Quality Downloads

In this age of the major record labels maximizing music profits at all costs, even if it involves installing spyware on consumers' computers, www.Magnatune.com stands apart. The website offers entire albums' worth of music of high quality for download in a choice of formats, from highest-quality MP3 (three times the size of iTunes MP3 files) to CD-quality WAV files. It also gives 50% of the money it collects directly to its artists. Magnatune founder John Buckman, 36, who divides his time between London and Berkeley, chose the site's motto: "Internet Music Without the Guilt: Magnatune, the open music record label."

This Week's Sony DRM News

It has now been over a month since Mark Russinovich broke the story about Sony BMG's DRM software that installed root kit code onto consumers' hard drives—exposing infected computers to malware intrusions and reporting back to Sony's servers via spyware installed without consumers' knowledge or consent. Rather than growing stale, however, the story just keeps going and going as new details come to light almost every day.

Question about Musical Fidelity X-10 v3 MU-VISTA Tube Buffer

Forgive me if this is not the right forum for this question, but it didn't seem to fit into any other. I just purchased a X-10 v3 MU-VISTA TUBE BUFFER based on quite a number of good reviews (They said it was stereophile "A" rated but I could not find the acutal review). I was wondering if anyone here has hear it or has any experence with it. i.e. Sound impressions, things to watch out for, tweaks, etc. Thanks!

Bel Canto SET 80 monoblock power amplifier Measurements

Although I retain a firm hold on the established audio world, and recognize and value all that it has achieved, I feel inexorably driven to make some space in my life for single-ended amplifiers—more especially, those that eschew negative feedback (footnote 1). A classic if costly example of the art is the Cary CAD-805C, which, to my ears, has earned the right to teach audiophiles what negative feedback really sounds like, and what damage it can do to the musical message when poorly handled. This shouldn't be taken as an out-of-hand dismissal of those many great pieces of electronics and amplification that use negative feedback—it is simply an acknowledgment, or even an assertion that negative feedback generates a sound of its own.
