I just inherited a set of Vintage JBL L100 speakers in perfect condition. I have read some mixed reviews about these speakers online.
Is it worth holding on to these speakers and upgrading at a later point?
If so, I still have around 1500 to spend... what would you suggest?
I was thinking:
Marantz PM504
Rega RP1
HRT Music Streamer II+ USB D/A Converter
I am unsure about wires, and I assume I do not need a pre-amp with the Marantz.
The only person who can decide whether to keep the L100's or not is you. If you like them you have your answer. If you don't you'll have no difficulty selling them. They are quite popular with the vintage and JBL lovers groups.
Fun! Here's what I would do, today, with $1500 and a naked room:
Rega RP-1 turntable ($450)
Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 loudspeakers ($350/pair)
Marantz PM5004 integrated amp (includes phono stage, $450) OR: NAD C 316BEE and PP3 USB phono preamp (around $500, total)
AudioQuest G-Snake interconnects ($34/0.5m pair) and Type 4 speaker cable ($179/6ft pair)
This system will kick ass, and you're left with a few dollars for a happy hour beer or some used records.
with respect to Mejias (who I really enjoy learning from by reading his articles)
I have an all-Rega system, and when I'm listening to it I know that it
is the best possible sound I can get from all of my components combined, so
I don't have to wonder "what if...."
I wish someone would have suggested this before I went through
mismatching components for a while.
