Many "Greatest Composers of the 20th Century" lists would include Copland, Gershwin, et al, but could also include Roy Orbison, Lennon-McCartney, and Scott Joplin. Who is your favorite?

Dmitri Shostakovich. I don't believe anyone can respond intelligently on the "Greatest Composers of the 20th Century" unless he or she is familiar with Shostakovich's music. Start with Symphony 5 or String Quartet 8.

Without a doubt... John Lennon... and not just for "Imagine", although that alone might get him the award... ...now *that* was the day the music died...

Sergei Rachmaninoff. His Piano Concerto 2 is captivating, and his Symphony 2 is underappreciated and should rank with the best symphonies of the modern era.
